Which foods are best for the gastric pouch?
DANNY, S.C. — If you have the stomach for it, it’s probably a good idea to start with a diet that includes more vegetables, nuts and fruits.
If the only food you have is steak, or bacon, that is good, too.
But if you don’t want to cut out dairy, it is probably best to stick to foods that are high in fiber and low in calories, according to the Mayo Clinic.
To determine which foods are most suitable for the pouch, eat them in equal portions in the same meal, or eat the same portion of a snack for a meal and eat the snack for the next day.
The Mayo Clinic recommends that people get about 20 grams of fiber per day, with a goal of at least 45 grams per day.
This means eating at least a half cup of fruits and vegetables each day, plus an ounce or two of whole grains and legumes.
When eating out, it also is best to limit the amount of processed meats, fried foods and sugary drinks.
While a healthy snack may sound like a recipe for disaster, Mayo Clinic nutritionist Mary Ann Schuster says a healthy meal can be a powerful tool to manage digestion.
“Most people who get diagnosed with gastric cancer have a history of chronic disease, so they often have issues with weight, depression, and anxiety,” Schuster told HuffPost.
Schuster suggests eating a few low-calorie foods to balance your energy levels and maintain healthy levels of electrolytes.
She recommends choosing foods with low salt and high fiber, which are low in sodium and contain fiber, vitamins and minerals.
Foods high in protein, such as chicken, beef, pork, and turkey, are also high in calcium, potassium, and vitamin D.
Schuster said it is important to understand what foods are beneficial to your digestive system and to eat them according to their health benefits.
For example, if you eat more vegetables and fruit, you may be eating more of these nutrients.
And if you’re eating lots of junk foods, you are also eating less of these.
She said that the key is to be conscious of what foods you eat, especially when it comes to fiber.
“I have found that if I’m not conscious about it, I end up with more issues than I had before,” she said.
“It’s not a good habit.”
A healthy diet is the first step in managing gastric cancers, and Schuster said if you want to be on the safe side, don’t eat a diet high in refined carbs and high in processed foods.
As long as you are eating enough fiber and fiber-rich foods, your cancer-fighting potential will be enhanced, Schuster added.
In fact, Schusters study found that the people who ate the most fruits and veggies had the greatest success with gastroparesis.
“I think it is very important that people understand that gastric bypass surgery is not the same as gastric emptying,” she added.
