How to get a job with a dietitious employer
Posted February 06, 2019 08:59:46 The average dietitians salary is $84,000, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a number that is expected to decline as the number of dietitists increases.
That’s a big difference from the $70,000 to $100,000 range that dietitics have earned in recent years, but not by much.
A recent study by the National Association of Dietitians found that the average dietician makes more than the average American worker, and that the wage gap is narrowing.
The pay gap is due to dietiticians working with different diets, the researchers found, and because of the way the profession is structured.
The profession is based on a “one-size-fits-all approach to nutrition, meaning dietities tend to work at restaurants, cafeterias, health food stores, fast-food outlets, and even retail stores,” the study found.
“While some dietitials have jobs with the same employers for a period of time, the vast majority of dieticians are employed by different companies or organizations,” the researchers concluded.
In other words, dietitologists tend to be hired from different organizations than their colleagues in the traditional medical field.
The research was published in the journal PLOS ONE.
The researchers also noted that there’s a wage gap for dietitical staff in the U.S. “Most dietitrics work in large, multinational food companies, including McDonald’s, Burger King, Subway, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell,” the authors said.
“The average wage for a dietician is $80,000 a year.”
The median salary for a non-dietician dietitician was $73,000.
However, it’s important to note that the median salary in the study was for non-food industry positions, and the median compensation was for a “diet” position.
According to the study, “The typical dietitic’s annual income is between $75,000 and $120,000 in 2016, while a full-time non-nurse dietitica would earn between $90,000-$100,00 annually.”
It’s worth noting that many dietitia positions are filled by people who have experience working in hospitals and other facilities, so it’s difficult to draw comparisons to traditional medical positions.
“In other fields, like pharmacology, dietetics, and clinical nutrition, we have a lot of different careers,” said Dr. Andrew Stoddard, a dietetics professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
“I think it’s helpful to take a broad perspective and recognize that the roles that we have as a profession are changing as we grow in size, as well as the demand for us to have those jobs.”
There are a lot more options available to dieticians than just going to the doctor’s office for checkups and prescriptions.
According the American Dietetic Association, “disease is now part of the food environment, and as more and more patients seek healthcare, the need for dieticians to perform nutritional screenings and clinical tests becomes more and better.”
“Dietitians are increasingly becoming a primary focus of food services and restaurants, which are increasingly finding that the dietary advice they provide is very popular with customers,” said Dietitian Association of America CEO and president Mike McElwain.
“It’s important for dietetic professionals to be aware of what customers want to eat, and to provide those health information to customers.”
