Which state has the best dietitians?
New Zealand’s dietiters licence is set to expire next year, and that means a glut of new graduates are applying to join the profession.
According to the New Zealand Dietitians Association, more than 100 people have applied for the license over the past two years, and more than 1,000 are currently working.
“This is a really important and exciting time for us, with the deadline for the licence coming up in February and then it’s just going to get more and more crowded,” association chairwoman, Catherine Collins, said.
New Zealand has seen an increase in the number of graduates since the introduction of the licence in 2017, with more than 300 graduates in the profession, including food-service professionals and nurses.
In 2018, more students applied than ever before, with nearly 3,000 graduates taking up positions.
There are now more than 30 different professions with a dietitioan licence in New Zealand, and they are largely determined by how well they manage their professional lives.
The profession has come under pressure from a number of factors.
It has been accused of being a place where people get treated like pets and treated like employees, which is a common complaint, and it’s also a place that’s been criticised for the amount of unnecessary regulations that have been put in place over the years.
“It’s an extremely stressful job, and you’re working on a very busy schedule and you get stressed about not being able to eat,” Ms Collins said.
“That’s the only way I can explain it.
I mean you’re on a 24-hour shift and then you’re going through food.”
There are several regulations that come with the profession that are not mandatory, but have been imposed to protect the public and help ensure the profession stays safe.
For example, there are strict rules on how many meals a person can consume per week, and there are specific rules for the food that needs to be served in restaurants and bars.
A person is also not allowed to eat more than six servings of food at a time.
Ms Collins also said there were strict rules around where and how the public can access the profession to help ensure that everyone can be healthy.
“The whole idea behind the licence is to make sure that we’re giving our people the best possible support,” she said.
The New Zealand Association of Dietitian Licensure is looking to expand its staff in order to help meet the demand for graduates.
While the new graduates don’t need to complete the requirements to be able to work in the industry, the association is looking for qualified dietitators to assist with the transition.
“We’ve got a very limited pool of people that have the necessary qualifications, so we’re looking for people who are in good health and are willing to make that transition,” association president, Rachel Jones, said, adding that the licence also gives them the ability to work remotely.
