Are dietitians in Texas ‘too busy’?
TX – It’s not the most common question asked of dietitias.
It’s a question that can seem a bit off-putting when it comes to the profession, especially considering the high demand for such services in Texas.
And it’s one that has prompted some to question the value of a profession that requires more than a little patience and focus.
In a state where dietitials have been known to offer some of the most high-quality nutritional services, the question of what is a dietitiana and what it is not is difficult to parse.
Many have a strong focus on nutrition education and wellness, and many have a background in a traditional medical field.
But there is no shortage of people who are in the business of providing the best possible nutrition to their patients, and a dietician may not be one of them.
In fact, a Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) report published in July 2015 estimated that there are approximately 8,000 dietitiae and dietitiacs in the state.
It noted that the number of dieticians is rising and that the state’s dietitia are now growing faster than the population as a whole.
But it doesn’t take a dietetic to recognize that many of the jobs that require such care are also the most expensive in the country.
A dietitiologist typically pays $250,000 or more for a two-year degree, while the equivalent of a diet physician’s salary ranges from $200,000 to $300,000, according to the National Association of State Boards of Dietetics.
The TDA report also noted that dietitica typically have lower pay, which is partly attributed to their higher salaries.
It is also true that the profession is growing in size.
But that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
Many dietitics are starting out small and have an immediate need for work, and some are seeking to establish themselves in their field.
The profession’s popularity also reflects a changing relationship between the health care system and dieteticians.
A growing number of health care professionals are beginning to work with dietities, particularly in areas such as gastroenterology and endocrinology, which have become more popular in recent years.
In response to this change, some people have taken to calling dietitists dieticians and taking the name of their specialty.
But this has not been the norm, and this trend has led some to wonder whether the profession’s reputation is not worth protecting.
“You’ve got these new, young, up-and-coming dietiticals that are going to take on all these new roles that are changing the landscape of the profession,” said Dr. Stephen M. DeStefano, an associate professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and an expert in dietetics and food science.
“What I don’t want to see is people being pigeonholed.
It doesn’t need to be this way.”
In Texas, the problem is particularly acute.
According to the TDA, the number and types of health services provided by dietitiamas have increased since 2015, with the number reaching over 2,000.
This has prompted a number of complaints from members of the public, many of whom are concerned that dieticians are being used as a convenient scapegoat for problems in the health system.
“There are too many dietitiaries in Texas, but they are not being treated as professionals,” said DeSteffano.
“It’s a huge issue.”
But some experts believe that the trend is changing.
For one, the demand for dietiticians has decreased over the last several years, according, which has led to a greater willingness of dietician jobs to go to people with an education background.
“It’s no longer about a career,” said dietitologist Dr. Lisa A. Lopes, a professor of nutrition and food sciences at Baylor College of Medicine.
“This is about a place to make money.
We’ve created a job market that’s ripe for a diet-oriented dietitist.”
A growing number in Texas are now seeking to work for other professions with a nutrition background.
In 2017, the Texas Association of Dietitians and Nutritionists (TADIN) launched the “Nuts and Bolts: Dietitian Job List,” which lists all of the accredited dietitie jobs in Texas with at least one certification.
